The principles of vastu can be applied to build or decorate your home. Following these principles will ensure that your house not only looks nice but will vibrate with positive energies. The North-East Corner

This corner is considered to be a sacred corner. The entrance, prayer room or water storage facility must be in this corner. Always keep it clean and don't allow it to get cluttered. Try not to use nails or pegs to fix anything on the walls of this corner. If you have a cupboard or shelves and can't move those, then don't put anything heavy on or in them.

The South-East Corner

The kitchen and dining room of the house should be in this corner. If you have your bedroom in this corner and cannot change the location, then arrange your bed along the north-south axis with your head facing the south.

The South-West Corner

Any imbalance in this corner could lead to accidents. All construction in this corner should be in perfect right angles. Heavy things can be kept here. The master bedroom should be in this corner.

The North-West Corner

This corner is a good place for the study but not for the master bedroom. Guest rooms are good in this corner. This particular corner should never be kept empty.

There are other basic vastu rules that should be followed for a harmonious and healthy home.

• Never hang pictures of violence, aggression and sorrow on the walls. They are considered to be inauspicious.
• Doors should always open inside the room instead of outside.
• Ventilation is very important in vastu. Ensure that there is good cross ventilation in the house. Open all the windows in your house at least twice a day.
• Never build any room under staircases.
• Don't use box beds. This inhibits the flow of energy which can lead to an imbalance of energies and insomnia.
• The total number of doors and windows should add up to an even number but not a number ending in 0. Also all the doors in the house should be in the north or east directions.
• You should never sleep under a beam. Not only is this dangerous, it also increases tension.
• Avoid placing television sets, plants or water bodies in the bedroom.
• Do not keep cactus or other thorny plants inside the house.
• Placing an aquarium in the south-east corner of the living room is considered auspicious. You could also hang a photograph of your family on the living room wall.
• Try not to hang mirrors on the walls in the south and west directions.
• Building cellars is not recommended by vastu. But if you need a cellar, then build it in the north-east direction.
