What Is Astrological Aspect?

In a horoscope, different planets make angles with each other. These angles are referred to as the astrological aspects. The planets, however, don't just make angles with other planets but they also make specific angles with nadir, descendant, midheaven, and ascendant.

The measurement of the aspects is done by angular distance along the ecliptic, as viewed from the earth. In this procedure, the celestial longitude between the two points is measured in minutes and degrees. These two points represent the focal points in the horoscope. Astrologers put extra emphasis on the energies involved in these points. It is believed that the astrological aspects deeply influence the affairs on Earth. Following is a brief description on the major aspects of astrology.

Conjunction (approx. 0-10)

A conjunction refers to an angle or an orb (separation) that is approximately 0-10 degree. However, in some cases, when the Moon or the Sun is not involved, the conjunction is said to be an orb of only about 008 degrees. Conjunction is a major point in the chart and is the most powerful astrological aspect. It intensifies the mutual affects of all the planets involved. Each astrological aspect has its own set of features. An essential feature of Conjunction is associated with the specific activities of planets. The union of the Sun, Jupiter, and Venus is considered as the most favorable conjunction. On the other hand, when the planets involved in the conjunction include the Moon, Saturn, and Mars, it is considered as the most unfavorable conjunction.

Sextile

When two planets make an angle of 60 degree, this astrological aspect is referred to as Sextile. Sextile also refers to the separation (orb) of 6004. This aspect represents the harmony and compatibility between the two elements and thus indicates the ease of communication between them.

Square

Square is the astrological aspect that is made when the two planets make an angle of 90 degree. The energy of the square is considered as stressful. For example, the square between Saturn and Mercury indicates an overemphasis on trivial details, excessive censoring of communication, mental restraint, inner conflict, disruption, inhibitions, frustration, tension, and a fearful approach to life. But, at the same time, this astrological aspect may also become a source of energy for those who accept challenges and are determined to overcome limitations.

Trine

Trine is another astrological aspect that is made when two planets make an angle of 120 degree. Trine is also represented by a separation or orb of 12004. It basically indicates an ease of expression and harmony between the two elements involved. It is the source of creative and artistic talent. Traditionally, this astrological aspect is considered as highly beneficial. However, excessive trines in a person's life have been found to have very negative characteristics, as that makes the person weak.

Opposition

When two planets make an angle of 180 degree with each other, the astrological aspect is referred to as Opposition. This astrological aspect is the second most powerful one after conjunction. It indicates confrontation, conflict, and tension because of the polarity between the two elements involved.

There are several minor astrological aspects as well, such as biquintile (144), quintile (72), semisextile (30), sesquiquadrate (135), semisquare (45), and quincunx (150).
